Dr. Anna M L Smith, Holistic Mind-Body Doctor
Can you tell us about your early life and the challenges you faced?
I was born and raised in the South of England, and my early years were indeed shaped by adversity. One of the most significant challenges was the loss of my sister to an eating disorder. This tragic event occurred during my first term at St Bartholomew’s Medical School in London, and it had a profound impact on me. It was a pivotal moment that made me realize how crucial lifestyle and emotional well-being are to overall health. This experience sparked my journey towards understanding how lifestyle factors influence health.
How did this personal loss influence your approach to medicine?
It was a catalyst for self-discovery. I started to see that traditional medicine, while excellent at treating disease, often falls short when it comes to addressing the whole person. I began to explore how lifestyle changes could play a significant role in preventing illness and improving overall well-being. This realization steered me towards a more holistic approach to health.
Your career has been deeply rooted in conventional medicine. Can you tell us about your early professional experiences and how they shaped your path?
I qualified as a doctor from St Bartholomew’s Medical School and began my career working in various hospitals across London and Surrey. My work in general medicine, obstetrics, and gynaecology, psychiatry, and paediatrics provided me with a solid foundation. I spent nearly 30 years as a GP, which exposed me to the complexities of patient care. Despite this rich experience, I felt a growing desire to explore alternative approaches to health.
What led you to explore holistic health?
My experiences with lifestyle changes made me acutely aware of the limitations of traditional medicine in addressing holistic health. Traditional Western medicine is excellent at diagnosing and treating diseases but often overlooks the prevention and the person as a whole. This realisation led me to pursue holistic health. Seven years ago, I discovered medical acupuncture, which profoundly resonated with my approach to health. I pursued formal training and earned my Certificate and Diploma from the British Medical Acupuncture Society.
How did medical acupuncture fit into your holistic approach?
Medical acupuncture offered a new dimension to my practice. It aligns well with a holistic approach, as it addresses both physical and emotional aspects of health. The benefits I observed in my patients were remarkable, which reinforced my belief in integrating different modalities for a more comprehensive approach to well-being.
Can you share your interest in Lifestyle Health Coaching?
Recognizing the importance of lifestyle in health led me to study Lifestyle Medicine. I completed a Diploma with The British Society of Lifestyle Medicine. This field focuses on the impact of daily habits and choices on health outcomes. I also took various coaching courses, including Tiny Habits Coaching, which teaches individuals to make lasting changes through small, manageable steps. This has been a rewarding aspect of my practice, as it empowers people to take control of their health in a sustainable way.
Tell us about the mind-body connection. How did that come into play?
My interest in the mind-body connection grew over time. I was particularly influenced by Dr. Howard Schubiner’s work on chronic pain and stress. This led me to train as a SIRPA (Stress Illness Recovery Practitioner Association) practitioner. The SIRPA approach emphasizes how stress and emotional factors contribute to physical and mental health issues. Integrating this perspective has been transformative in addressing conditions that traditional medicine often struggles with, such as chronic pain and medically unexplained symptoms.
Your approach is truly holistic, focusing on treating the whole person rather than just symptoms. What drives your passion for this work?
My personal experiences have shown me the importance of treating the whole person. It’s not just about managing symptoms but about fostering balance and harmony in all aspects of life. I specialize in chronic pain and medically unexplained symptoms, where a holistic approach can be particularly effective. My goal is to empower individuals to take control of their health and well-being, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.
What are your hopes for the future?
I hope to continue inspiring and guiding individuals on their health journeys. My aim is to further develop and refine my holistic approach, helping more people achieve not just the absence of illness, but true health and well-being. I believe that a comprehensive approach to health can make a significant difference in people’s lives.
I’m excited to continue this work and make a positive impact on the lives of those I have the privilege to work with.
