Burnout is not a new concept. It has been around for years and will continue to be a reality for executives and professionals unless they take matters into their own hands and take conscious action for a different life. The fact is, that recent research carried out amongst executive-level staff relating to burnout shows that over 50 percent of the respondents are negatively affected. Over 50%!
Most of us experience the day-to-day ordeal of waking up during the workweek in fear of the upcoming day the micro-aggressions, the never-ending emails, phone calls, and meetings, the ever-growing pile of work, the superior that is never satisfied with your efforts, the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, the fear never stops either. The constant stress has a medical term called toxic stress. It literally makes you sick.
You may be able to convince yourself that after you get that new promotion, higher salary or advanced qualification things will get better, and happiness will finally be achieved. You will finally have the new automobile, yacht, or designer home you have been yearning for and all will be well.
The problem here is, you will most likely never get to enjoy these material benefits because you will be working ever harder trying to cover the costs of the next big thing. Yes, your family will be living in the perfect house you have provided, but a house is not a home if you are not able to be there yourself. Sometimes, you need to open your eyes and realize enough is enough.
I did, and I will never again allow this to happen to me. I had a corporate job, expense account, and company car. Was I burnt out? Absolutely. But I kept on going thinking I had no other choice. I truly believed there was no other alternative.
I have since managed to start a successful coaching business in less than 6 months. This does not happen by feeling that level of burnout without making the changes. You have to realize that there is more to life than the daily grind that we are so easily consumed by. Of course, there are many hurdles along the way as with all situations of change, but the good news is that all it really takes is to stay motivated, to be resilient and relentless in your pursuits.
I sometimes wonder to myself as I watch others living their lives in a whirlwind and rushing by in their suits and with their briefcases, Rolex on the wrist but with a heavy heart thinking about what is waiting for them at the office when they arrive after their second cup of caffeine wears off.
Do they believe they just can’t make the change?
Do they believe there is no other alternative?
Are they persuaded by the peers they have surrounded themselves with that this is the only way to live life?
Do they believe that work is work and is not meant to be fun or to give you joy?
I am proof that you can certainly enjoy your job quite easily as long as you break through that heavy wall of fear that prevents you from believing in yourself and what you truly can achieve in this one beautiful life you get to live. You can never re-live Today, so you had better make sure it counts!
The first step to breaking out is as simple as realizing that this is not IT there is so much more to life.
Acknowledge the thoughts of fear but dismiss them.
Free your will and motivation by going far beyond the psychological control of your corporate hierarchy that forces you to believe that there is no more to life than the daily grind.
Be resilient to failure, adapt to seeing failure as a goal through which you learn and grow.
Stay relentless in your focus. Do not let yourself be distracted needlessly.
Start jotting down every single idea you get no matter how small to achieve your goals.
top wishing your dreams or even blocking them and begin to action them to evolve into your new way of life.
I know this is not the easiest change to make, if it were, this world would be a very different place. That is why I love what I do so much. I not only get to be there for thousands of people who are suffering from exactly what I was suffering from, but I get to watch them evolve and excel. So far this has been the most rewarding feeling I have experienced, and I wouldn’t change it for the world and most definitely not for another corporate job.
The longer you spend experiencing your professional life through a veil of fear the greater the danger that your soul will lose hope of a way out. The notion that you can unite all the elements of a good life that is fulfilling, purposeful, and even enjoyable while still producing a successful income, would probably be lost. But it can happen for you!
Once the spark of realization ignites sometimes all that is required for the next step is to identify a mentor who has the insight to guide you along the path. I have walked this road and it is my mission to assist others to achieve similar outcomes for themselves. I go beyond the simple setting of goals and objectives but delve into obstacles that are preventing the achievement of results and how to reach those results. Together.
When you simply can’t face another morning knowing full well what your day will bring, know that you have a choice. There are alternatives and steps you can take to break the burnout cycle. Most importantly you don’t have to face it alone.
