Striving for success often means pushing our boundaries, constantly seeking to excel, work harder, and set our sights higher. However, amidst this quest for achievement, it's vital not to forget an essential ingredient to real success: mental health. Achieving a harmony between outstanding accomplishments and mental well-being isn't just a smart approach—it's indispensable. In my latest series, "Balancing Brilliance," entrepreneurs reveal their strategies for maintaining mental health alongside their journey to success. Today, I had the privilege of speaking with entrepreneur Buff Patterson. Having known Buff for over eight years, her vibrancy and positive energy have always stood out. I was thrilled when she agreed to share her insights on preserving mental health while expanding her brand and managing a family of six.

Buff, it's an honor to have this conversation with you. I'm eager to dive into your story.

Can you provide an overview of who you are and your background? What motivated or inspired you to pursue a career in your industry?

I am a filmmaker, writer, comic and a mom of 6. A lot of circumstances have encouraged me to be the person I am today. I was only 2lbs at birth, so I think I came out a fighter. I thought growing up I would have been a fashion designer or a chef. Funny thing is I have fulfilled both of these ideals. I am currently still modeling, and I’ve co-owned a large catering company.

Even though I had those accomplishments, I had a desire to make people laugh. About the same time, I started comedy, I began writing a script about a woman that goes under-cover to stop child sex trafficking, which is based in a 70’s esq era. It’s my ode to the legendary Pam Grier. My main motivation is to continue to grow and share my art as an artist.

Reflecting on your career path, what skills or qualities do you believe have been essential to your success? Are there specific learning experiences or mentors that played a crucial role in your development?

I have a “nonstop” clause in my life and an ability to encourage and motivate. It is God given. I cannot stop something I haven’t finished. I have had many mentors. I had an elderly woman I met when I was 15 and she said something that stuck with me my whole life. She said it’s only two things you can do in bed all day and none of it takes all day. I took that as a concept in life. Don’t sleep your life away. There are things to be done.

Success often involves taking risks and facing uncertainties. How do you navigate moments of uncertainty or self-doubt without letting it negatively impact your mental health? Are there mindset shifts or perspectives that have helped you overcome such challenges?

As an artist, I have self-doubt and self-criticism. I have to remember not to compare myself to my contemporaries. I have scriptures embossed in my heart. They are like road maps; “What

God has for me, no man can take away”, “Without God I can’t accomplish anything and with Him, I can accomplish everything.” I know I’m not just fighting people; I’m fighting my own thoughts and principalities that test my faith. I have to remember that God made me. I am not a mistake. He has plans for my life. I surround myself with people with like minds.

Building a successful career often involves overcoming challenges. Can you discuss a significant challenge you faced in your career and how you tackled it? What lessons did you learn from that experience?

I was a successful salesperson for over 20 years, and I had an account that was a 4-million- dollar account in my territory. Ny company had a terrible relationship with the company, and I was told I would never ever get their business. It took 5 years of no, no, no and never before I was able to penetrate that account. The worst part was after I got them to 4 million, we lost the account, but because I never gave up, I was able to get their business back and grew even bigger. I had similar instances in my life where I’ve had to fight through adversity. I’ve learned people do business with people they like. Because I have a family with mental health concerns, I’m even more aware of the detriment and not being in tuned can be harmful. I truly believe that forgiveness helps me move forward with my life. We get hurt in situations and hurt people. I’m quick to forgive. I don’t hold a lot of accounts of people. I also don’t cast my pearls before swine. That was a long process. I pray for God to continue to bring to the forefront of where he wants me to be and the people, he wants me with. I have accountability partners that help along my journey. God reminds me, the assignment is not done yet. I am raring to continue and expand my brand.

Thank you, Buffy, for sharing your wonderful story. Balancing brilliance with mental health is not just about achieving success; it's about redefining it. Success that comes at the expense of our well-being is not truly success. By prioritizing our mental health, setting boundaries, embracing a growth mindset, practicing self-care, building a supportive network, and treating mental well-being as a continuous journey, we can achieve a kind of success that is fulfilling, sustainable, and true to ourselves. Remember, in the pursuit of success, our mental health is our most valuable asset.
