Victoria Norton, Psychologist, Hypnotherapist, Mindset Coach

Can you share your journey and what led you to retrain as a Psychologist hypnotherapist and mindset coach?

"I've always been captivated by the diverse ways in which people experience the world. This fascination has been a constant in my work, even during my time in corporate banking as a relationship manager. I found myself naturally gravitating towards roles that centered on understanding relationship dynamics.

I believe this inclination traces back to my early and teenage years. School wasn't easy for me, I was very introverted and I battled shyness, dyslexia, and dyspraxia, which gave me a unique perspective on the world. At the time, I carried a self-doubt narrative, often telling myself, 'I'm not good enough; it's too difficult.' However, I've come to view this unique lens as a significant advantage and am very attuned to other people.

While working in the city I would work long hours and spend my weekends in bed with a migraine, this work harder, longer culture seemed to be the expectation but I became increasingly aware that there was those progressed quickly, with seemly ease and balance – their secret they felt aligned to their work, energised by it rather than drained by it.

These experiences prompted me to ponder the meaning of success, what enables us to thrive versus burnout, and how we can strike a balance between achieving success and finding a sense of purpose. We all share the common desire to feel valued and to believe that our actions make a meaningful impact. However, the path to achieving this sense of purpose varies for each person. In my case, I recognized the need to discover my own purpose.

Driven by this desire for personal growth and a fascination with the human experience, I pursued a BSc in psychology with the Open University purely out of interest. As I delved deeper into this field, I realized the importance of purpose and impact in my life. This realization led me to pursue a clinical psychology master's degree, and I'm now on the brink of completing my DCPsych.

Balancing work, study and my responsibilities as a single mom has been undeniably challenging, but the sense of fulfilment I derive from my work makes every effort worthwhile, I get to live my purpose which is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and something I strive to help others achieve.

Can you tell me more about your approach to personal development?

I believe self-development is an ongoing, lifelong pursuit, and I'm a firm believer in embracing imperfection. I see true growth arising from self-acceptance, compassion, and self-kindness as a foundational basis for change. I encourage my clients to become accountable and take ownership for their own growth and write their narrative of who they are with a conscious purpose rather than expecting a magic pill to happiness. We need to put in the hard work to achieve our success.

I personally found this to be true in my own life. On the surface, I was juggling a demanding doctoral program, a career in the NHS, launching my business, and the responsibilities of being a single mom. I appeared incredibly strong, driven, independent, and highly functioning. However, beneath the surface, I battled the narratives of 'I'm not good enough' and experienced imposter syndrome, along with significant academic insecurity.

What is the philosophy that underpins your approach?

We all have the power to direct our life and own our story to one of success and happiness. I teach that we need three elements to be present in order to be successful which are;

Vision + Belief + Action

My approach is very focused and incorporates these three elements in a way that is designed to address the unique needs of each individual at their particular stage of their life journeys. What sets my program apart is the fusion of three powerful approaches:

Psychology: First a vison of the clients ideal self is created while working together to uncover and address current patterns, blockages, and negative self-narratives.

Hypnotherapy: The client’s narratives are rewritten, and a new reality crafty, this enables the embedding of new beliefs at a subconscious level.

Coaching: It provides a structured, accountably element focused on strategic action.

I incorporate various aspects depending on my clients' needs to help them create the vision, belief, and action necessary to become successful, purpose-driven leaders in their chosen field. My primary focus is to assist clients in bridging the gap between professional success and nurturing deep, meaningful connections in their personal lives, all without sacrificing their authentic selves.

What challenges do your clients typically face, and how does your approach assist them in overcoming these challenges?

Clients that come to me are commonly face challenging related to self-doubt, imposter syndrome, integrating their personal and professional selves, and maintaining authenticity. They have been able to obtain a high degree of success and are often industry leaders but these insecurities may have initially driven them to strive for more and achieve more, but over time, they can become restrictive. What once propelled them to their current position may not be enough to reach their desired destination of impact, purpose, and happiness. Ultimately, we all seek to feel that we are enough, valued, and have a sense of purpose in life but when we are consumed by negative self-belief we cant experience our success, our value and become dissociated form our true self. Ultimately, I help people say its safe to be me, to be accepted as I am and I am enough. This is freeing and serves as a platform for unshakable confidence and abundance of true success and wealth.

My approach is designed to effectively address these common challenges:

Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome: By combining psychology, hypnotherapy, and coaching, I assist individuals in uncovering and reprogramming their self-limiting beliefs. This process reshapes their self-narratives, leading to increased confidence and the ability to overcome self-doubt and imposter syndrome.

Work-Life Balance: Balancing career success with personal life is a common struggle. My approach focuses on the integration of these aspects, promoting harmony instead of viewing them as separate entities. This approach helps individuals find equilibrium and avoid feeling the need to sacrifice one for the other.

Maintaining Authentic Personal Connections: Achieving professional success should not come at the expense of personal connections. I guide individuals in maintaining deep and meaningful relationships while pursuing their career goals.

In summary, my approach offers a holistic and tailored strategy that empowers professionals to conquer these challenges and attain both career success and personal fulfilment.

The simple truth is we all want to feel wanted, valued, we are enough! I help my clients find this.

Can you provide an example of a transformative story from your work with a client?

Recently, I began worked with a corporate lawyer who faced professional stagnation and described their personal life as non-existent and lonely.

Despite a successful track record, he had been overlooked for partnership for three consecutive years. This situation led to a crossroads in his career where he was questioning his options, this was negatively impacting his health, confidence, and emotional well-being.

We began by asking a fundamental question: "Who do you want to be?" I find often people forget there is a choice in who we are, what we do and how we present ourselves to the world.

We crafted a vision for his desired self and delved deep to uncover unhealthy thought patterns, address work-life balance, and build confidence. During this process, he had a profound realization, his self-doubt was deeply connected to his people-pleasing tendencies, his difficulty in setting boundaries, and his avoidance of romantic relationships due to a fear of rejection.

This self-awareness was rooted in his childhood experiences where his mother left when he was 6 years old and he was constantly compared to his elder brother by his father. He had taken it upon himself to strive for perfection and make everyone happy so his father wouldn’t leave.

Together, we co-create a new narrative, embedding it at a subconscious level, and develop strategic actions to drive lasting change where he accepted, he had the ability to direct his story and took ownership of creating a new reality in which he could be his ideal self. We achieve these working together, we co-create a new narrative, embedding it at a subconscious level, and develop strategic actions to drive lasting change. My client has begun to think about the possibility of dating and has initiated a conversation at work around his progressing to partner in the next 12 months.

Walking alongside my clients as they unravel these transformative insights brings me immense joy and reinforces my commitment to helping individuals reshape their stories and reprogram their minds to lead fulfilling lives that resonate with their deepest desires.

How do you help clients overcome self-limiting stories and create new narratives for true transformation?

I tailor my approach to each client's unique situation and needs. I begin by comprehending the story they are currently telling themselves about their identity, recognizing how it acts as a limiting factor in their life. I delve deeper to uncover the underlying narrative, as this provides the foundation for reconstructing the story, crafting new narratives, and ultimately achieving genuine transformation.

What do you do to re-energize?

We either re-energize with others or alone, I fall into the second bracket I primarily re-energize when I'm alone in nature. Whether it's being near water or taking a walk in the park, I find solace in watching the world go by and getting lost in the play of light through the leaves.

Can you tell us about your current research?

upcoming research project delves into the formation of our professional identity through the narratives we construct about ourselves. Its primary goal is to shed light on the interconnectedness between one's personal and professional self. This research aims to explore how the stories we tell ourselves about who we are professionally can affect our personal lives and vice versa. It has the potential to offer valuable insights into the intricate relationship between our self-perception in the professional realm and its impact on our overall well-being. The findings may help individuals better understand and navigate this dynamic connection to lead more fulfilling lives both personally and professionally.

Is there anything you are excited to be working on at the moment?

I'm also involved in two significant projects. First, I'm finishing my book, with a working title of What if?." As someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia this is something I never though I would achieve but given the right determination, drive and support we can achieve the seemingly impossible.

Second, I'm developing an app, a new area for me I’m more of a passionate than technical person. The App is designed to make mental health concepts and well-being tools accessible in an engaging way. The app will offer practical tips, guides, exercises from a few minutes to 45 minutes, and group sessions.

Can you tell us about how you work with clients?

I work with a small select number of clients at a time as I offer a very in-depth personalised relationship, each engagement lasts at least between 12 weeks and six months to ensure lasting results of financial freedom, success and a sense of purpose and happiness. This commitment is essential because while insights can happen instantly, achieving lasting transformation requires ongoing dedication, practice and accountability to create and embed long-term change in all areas of the person’s life.
