My wife and I have a garden in our backyard. The first year we had it, we did many things right and several wrong, as you can imagine. I built the garden boxes and added great soil. We made sure we planted the seeds at the right time and watered them well. That’s all good, but there were a few things we didn’t do well. We picked random seeds to plant, like kale. We don’t like kale. But boy, did it grow. We also put in too many seeds, so we had too many plants, but we didn’t thin our crop as we should have.

This growth and productivity tool is much like planting a garden.

To successfully grow thriving plants, you have to be purposeful with the soil, watering, planting, thinning, and weeding. You need to know your garden. As with your garden, you need to know your life to grow in life. Just like with a garden, our relationships/ activities/attitudes need thinning, watering, planting, tilling, and harvesting. Sometimes, what needs to be removed is tangled with an otherwise healthy plant. If the garden looks a little dry, we may need to do some more watering to help it flourish again. Sometimes, we need to turn the soil and add some new healthy soil in. The same is true in our lives. We have to change our environment and contexts and start doing things differently to make the necessary changes. We all have people/situations/ circumstances in our lives that need to be nourished, thinned, or removed. You’ll start to see the healthy plants, weeds, and dying plants when you think back. You may even see some unhealthy soil or environments that need to change in your life. When you think about your “garden,” can you see the signs that help you to know whether it’s thriving or not? This hack allows you to look at your life in a way to begin to make changes that immediately benefit your life. This growth tool clarifies what you need to do more of, what to do less of, what to start doing, what to stop doing, and what to keep doing.

The right questions are what empowers you to know your life to grow in your life. Every weed you pull, every plant that gets thinned, every new seed you plant, and every time you water, or till your soil, you are making significant changes in your life that will help you create a beautiful and thriving garden. A garden where you grow, and you’re proud of the results. A garden that you create and maintain how you want to, with intention. Imagine thriving in your marriage and relationships. Imagine growing in your work — knowing what is essential, knowing what to cut out. When you step back and take an honest look at yourself, you’re more talented, gifted, and capable than you realize. But you may also have some habits and behaviors you need to reconsider. The MOLO will help you to see both sides more clearly. The More of Less of (MOLO) growth tool helps you determine what behaviors, values, strengths, and weaknesses you need to address and then use this information to build powerful habits that will give you the best opportunity to thrive in life and business. Pick a specific subject the ask yourself:

  • What do I need to do More Of? (The MO in MOLO)

  • What do I need to do Less Of? (The LO in MOLO)

  • What do I need to Start Doing?

  • What do I need to Stop Doing?

  • What do I need to Keep Doing?

Note: When you try this easy exercise, restrict yourself to one subject at a time and then pick no more than one activity from each question category to avoid making an oversize to-do list! For more on this topic, you can listen to my podcast episode that explains how to apply the MOLO to your leadership and life.

How will you use the MOLO?
