I’ve been watching a Netflix series called “Manifest.” The premise is a plane was assumed to have crashed, but after an extensive search, was never found. Five years later it reemerged, casually landing in a New York airport. The passengers and crew were shocked to realize they had been declared missing. No one had aged; people with illnesses needed no care; life had changed without them.
Readjusting to a different world, they all started receiving “callings,” clear and intense instructions to do odd, illogical things. If they chose not to listen, the callings got more insistent until they did. They found out the life-or-death importance of these messages as well as unexpected, mysterious inter-connections.
Each calling recipient resisted, hiding their new ability, terrified to be perceived as odd. It’s a clear reminder that the world is still holding fast to the notion that spiritual awakenings are judged as weird or a symptom of insanity.
What’s a spiritual awakening?
Spiritual awakenings are difficult to describe in words although many have tried. They can be subtle or profound but are always a uniquely personal experience. Many seekers spend lifetimes trying to attain one, hoping for the life-shifting results that arrive from them.
Even though much has been written about spiritual awakening, they will not happen from reading accounts, researching or even diligently striving for one. However, there are some steps to help spur it along.
Suggestions to help open the door to an awakening:
Be open to experiencing awakening. If you think you are ready, you probably are.
Challenge yourself to discover your true self. This gives your spirit the message that it’s time to awaken, time to be consciously aware of other energetic dimensions.
Work on self-acceptance, especially your so-called weaknesses and self-defined flaws. Spiritual awakening involves not suppressing any aspect of yourself, not hiding from human emotions, labeling them as negative or projecting them on others.
Appreciate your unique strengths. They could be exposing your life purpose, your unique contribution to bring the world, why you chose to be here. Spiritual awakening means knowing that your life is meaningful yet not needing to prove it.
Begin letting go of your attachment to the material world. Addiction to physical possessions can seriously hamper spiritual awakening. Enjoy being in a body, but know you are not your body.
Struggling to get validation, approval, attention and love from others is a common programmed trap. Work on knowing you are enough. Be the love you are seeking.
Transcend beyond yourself. Feel connected with all life, no longer identifying as a separate and different, being
Signs to recognize spiritual awakening
Everyone’s experience of spiritual awakening is different, specifically designed as to what will work best for the individual. The following are some universal signs to help you recognize what’s happening.
1. Your belief system is shifting.
You’re starting to see life with new eyes; things you bought as truths are changing. You’ve started to think outside your comfort zone, letting go of fears and limitations, open to doing new things.
2. You want to discover yourself.
There’s a new sense of inner curiosity, wanting to delve into self-discovery. You are becoming a different version of yourself and are drawn to things that will lead you there. The more you discover, the more alive you feel.
3. You’re interested in inner growth and love.
Your goals and desires are changing. You are less interested in accumulating possessions and may want to live a simpler life. You crave more meaningful experiences, truthful communication, deeper relationships.
4. You’re feeling deeper emotions.
The journey of awakening consists of feeling your human emotions. This can create inner turmoil as you question past choices and perhaps feel guilt or remorse. These reactions are common as you complete your process of releasing and moving on. Feel and embrace it all to achieve a profound sense of self.
5. You connect to the world.
As you awaken, you notice synchronicity, a meaningful, unexpected coincidence demonstrating that everything is connected. Things make sense both now and in the past. It also shows that you’re letting go
of needing to control and are living in a more trusting, empowered way.
6. You feel empathy and compassion.
You start feeling less self-absorbed and more attuned to what others are experiencing. This sense of oneness allows you to become more compassionate and willing to assist when needed.
7. You feel more joyfully alive.
As you clarify who you are and let go of your past, joy rather than confusion becomes your M.O. You start to transcend your fear of death, knowing that you could not possibly be a failure. Your sense of inner connection allows you to experience life from an authentic, content place.
8. You feel pulled to make a difference.
You feel drawn to social causes, needing to do things that generate bigger changes. You sense that this is your life purpose and easily commit to it.
9. You’ve gone through an extreme event.
Spiritual awakening often starts from experiencing an emotional ordeal, a big loss of some kind. Traumas frequently catalyze enlightenment as you reflect on and learn from the Big Lessons being presented to you.
You see these experiences as lessons, rather than tragedies.
10. You’re more aware of inner programming and triggers.
Once you open the door to examining your life, you become more aware of the power of triggered false programs. You are inspired to make big changes, awaken to your authentic self and your unique spiritual journey. You know there is nothing more important and effortlessly commit to this transformational experience no matter the challenges.
A universal truth is all human beings are on an ongoing trek toward spiritual awakening. It’s what we are all here to accomplish.
Since it may not look at all as you expect, and there’s no drum roll announcing it, let go of preconceived notions about this life-shifting awakening. Just enjoy the ride!
