The reason why people never reach the life they desire.
Do you ever feel like problems are following you around? You get rid of one only for another to jump out and set you back all over again.
They steal your focus and get in the way of the life you're trying to build. Every period of bliss has an expiration date so you never have enough time to actually reach that dream life.
If that describes your experience at all, then let me explain why you'll always be in a never-ending cycle of the problem after problem after problem until you make this one shift.
Our focus creates our reality, in a very literal sense.
Our brain is detecting around 400 billion bits of information per second. That's a LOT. So much so that it would be beyond impracticable, probably impossible, and certainly overwhelming, for us to consciously interpret all of it.
So our mind helps us out by filtering the information, disregarding that which doesn't seem critical or relevant. Like pressing the delete key to eliminate whole paragraphs of writing. In fact, out of those 400 billion bits, we only consciously receive 2 thousand bits per second. Far more manageable.
But hang on, who chose which bits to ignore? Who chose which bits to feed us? Well, it was us. But not our conscious mind. It was our subconscious mind. A mind that is run by a set of beliefs and programs that were primarily imputed during our first few years of life.
"So, a brain with the perspective of a child is literally deleting swaths of the world around us."
And that which it does feed us doesn't get delivered in original form. That same brain distorts the external world, passing it through a set of filters that correspond to our beliefs and memories and emotions and concepts, to eventually, arrive as an internal representation of the external world.
Note the word representation. For it is just that. The way you are perceiving the world is not true. You took the truth of reality and threw some away, then morphed the rest of it so that it fits into your pre-set worldview as much as possible.
And people wonder how others can see something so differently from them. Your mind is playing tricks on you as much as theirs is deceiving them.
Put simply, the way our mind is focused creates our own unique tunnel vision, which in turn creates our entire perception of reality. And we all know that the way you interpret something determines the way you react, or choose to behave.
"So your focus acts like a compass for your actions, creating a kind of North star to which your results will lead."
The challenge is, where we think our focus lies is rarely where it actually does. Because our conscious mind is a tiny aspect of our brain as a whole. So a lot of your mind is acting of its own accord, without your knowing.
So then how do we know where we've placed the North star of our focus?
Well, if your focus determines your results, then we can reverse-engineer our life to gain an understanding of where our focus must be.
But I could also just tell you.
Because if you're like 99% of the world, your focus is on the PROBLEM. Which problem? Every problem. Our world has become a problem-solving robot.
Society is teaching us to only ever solve problems. Everything is about finding solutions. Society defines problems and then we all spend our entire lives resolving them.
But if our mind is wired to only ever seek solutions, then what must there always be? Problems. Because without a problem, well, then what would we do? Solve the unsolvable?
The tunnel vision of our mind becomes like a magnet to problems. So how can we ever escape? We can't.
How can we ever just create what we desire? We can't – our mind is too busy trying to overcome all the things we don't want.
"It's literally like trying to run a race looking backwards."
Looking at the very opposite of what you want whilst trying to run forward to your dreams. But those dreams are just that – dreams. Fantasies. You haven't made them into a vision – how could you when you're pointing your eyes the other way.
"Your North star is not above your dream life, it's located precisely above the life you'd most hate to have."
That's a bit backwards, don't you think?
Let me show you how it plays out.
"I hate my body, I've really let myself go, I'm so fat now! I don't like this. I don't want this." So I'm driven by the pain of my current reality which I dislike. I'm driven to punish myself into exercise and attempt to starve myself.
"Ah, finally! It's paying off. I've lost a bit of weight!"
And the pain diminishes. In fact, you feel kind of good because look! You're not so close to the body size you hate anymore. But that pain was your only motivation. So at this point, where does your motivation go?
It seems to vanish into thin air. You have a cheat day. You slip off the diet. Fall off the wagon... And sooner or later you end up right back where you started. Hating your body again.
"And so repeats the cycle. Why do you think diets are so associated with the swing of a yo-yo?"
It's precisely due to this problem focus. Driven by pain to get away from. That will never be enough to get you where you really want to go – only enough to keep you skirting the border of what is "unacceptable" to you.
99% of people live a life of avoiding problems.
Being just far enough away from what they don't want that they feel okay. They survive. They ward off the pain.
So they avoid the poverty, dis-ease, the loneliness,... and end up with just enough money, just enough health, and just enough distraction. They may manage sufficient holidays to avoid the life they dislike enough to keep going and maintain glimmers of joy. But they need the holidays because they're living a life they desire to escape.
My question to you is, shouldn't we move to create a life we love so much that coming back from the holiday is something to look forward to? A life where most of our days are lived in joy and inspiration?
"And let's be honest, just because you avoid what you don't want, doesn't mean you end up with what you do want."
But people are too fearful of the problems. Too fixated on avoiding or escaping. We've forgotten that we can just choose to create – to literally decide we want to manifest something in our life and then be inspired to take action to create it.
We've forgotten how to be driven by a love for what we're creating, focused on a real vision, and enjoying the process of manifesting it. Rather than be motivated to get away from something we can't stand to have in our life.
Motivation is temporary. And it's associated with pain because you're using pain to gain motivation... that's not going to encourage motivation in your life, is it?
Inspiration can last a lifetime. When you're being pulled like a magnet towards something because you just love it so much, and desire it so deeply, it doesn't dissipate until you actually reach it.
"No need for the pain. Love is enough."
Pain is useless in the long run because it never lasts long enough to get you where you truly want to go. True love and desire from your heart live on. They can take you anywhere. And they'll fill your life with love rather than pain. I'd choose that any day of the week. Wouldn't you?
