Andrea Douala, Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach
How has your health journey shaped your approach to fitness and wellness?
I’ve always had an interesting relationship with food. I never had what you would call “bad” eating habits, but I had a fast metabolism, so I could eat a lot and remain very slim. Exercise, however, was a different story. I was always so focused on helping others and prioritizing their well-being that I completely neglected my own. It wasn’t until I faced two car accidents and struggled with my mental health that I realized how far I had drifted from taking care of myself. Those were the turning points that pushed me to reconsider my own health.
When I went through those challenging times, I lost my self-esteem and my joy in life, finding myself trapped in a dark space. It was in those moments that I knew I needed something to pull me back something to help me reconnect with life. That “something” turned out to be fitness. But it wasn’t an easy journey. Every time I looked in the mirror, I saw a reflection that made me feel stuck, carrying the weight of my experiences physically, mentally, and emotionally. I wanted to become a new person, someone full of life again, but I struggled. I had to go through what I call my "rebirth," a kind of surgery of the mind, body, and soul.
Fitness became the tool that allowed me to rebuild myself, one step at a time. As I began to exercise, I started to learn how to love myself again. I stopped comparing myself to others and focused on being my own competition. Fitness became my therapy, my way to heal physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It taught me patience, discipline, courage, and focus, all of which have proven essential in everyday life. These qualities not only shaped my health journey but also inspired the foundation of MissDoualaFitness. Through my own experience, I’ve come to understand that fitness is so much more than just physical change. It’s about strengthening the mind, healing the soul, and embracing the journey of self-discovery.
For the first time in my life, I wasn’t ashamed of taking time for myself. I didn’t feel guilty about investing in my health. And most importantly, I realized that when you start prioritizing your well-being, everything else aligns. Fitness gave me the power to step into the best version of myself and I want to help others do the same through MissDoualaFitness. Because once you start seeing the value of investing in yourself, the impact it has on every area of your life is immeasurable.
How does MissDoualaFitness support its community beyond fitness, such as through mindset and lifestyle coaching?
At MissDoualaFitness, we believe that true health is about more than just physical fitness; it’s about cultivating a balance between the mind, body, and soul. That’s why we go beyond workouts and nutrition plans to support our community with tools and guidance that promote a healthier mindset and a sustainable lifestyle.
One way we do this is through education. I firmly believe that if you understand why you’re doing something, not just how you’re not just following a plan, you’re developing knowledge. Fitness and nutrition are rooted in science, and science requires a certain logic. When you understand the concepts behind your workouts, meals, and habits, you empower yourself to make informed decisions and avoid being misled by all the noise and misinformation on social media. Knowledge gives you confidence, and no one can take that away from you.
Through our content, coaching, and programs, we help clients uncover their “why” and their personal motivation to prioritize their health. This self-discovery process is key to making meaningful, lasting changes. We also emphasize the importance of mindset because we know that success starts with your thoughts. Weekly affirmations, reflections, and motivational resources are integrated into our approach to help clients stay grounded and inspired on their journey.
In addition to mindset, we encourage habits that promote lifestyle balance, from practical tips for managing time and stress to strategies for embracing self-care. As a bilingual business, we’re also committed to making this knowledge accessible to diverse audiences, offering content and services in both French and English.
At MissDoualaFitness, we’re not just here to help you build strength and confidence in your body; we’re here to empower you to create a life that aligns with your values, priorities, and unique story. Fitness and nutrition are powerful tools, but when combined with mindset and lifestyle coaching, they become a foundation for a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Can you share more about the services you offer? How do they differ from other fitness and wellness programs?
I’m a firm believer that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to fitness and wellness. Everyone has their own unique realities, and my services are designed to reflect that. Let’s face it: a full-time student might have more time to work out but may face financial limitations when seeking a program that truly meets their needs. On the other hand, a single mom’s daily life is completely different, with unique challenges and priorities.
That’s why I offer two types of services:
The general option: This is a more affordable, accessible program that provides structured guidelines. It empowers clients to adapt the plan to their own schedule and needs.
The customized option: This is my most popular service, designed specifically for the client’s individual preferences, lifestyle, and health goals. Everything is calculated for them, from workouts to nutrition. All they need to do is follow the plan! This option starts with a free virtual consultation to better understand the client’s needs, and it also includes the flexibility to choose between irregular or regular follow-up sessions based on their budget and preferences.
At MissDoualaFitness, the client is in the driver’s seat. They have the freedom to build a package that works for their budget, schedule, and goals, ensuring their fitness journey is not only effective but also sustainable. My mission is to make fitness accessible and personalized so every client feels supported, no matter where they’re starting from.
You’re a certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, and a full-time master’s student researching obesity and diabetes. How do you juggle all these roles?
Since I was young, I’ve relied on calendars and planning tools to structure my weeks effectively. Staying organized has always been my foundation, but I truly learned the value of discipline through fitness. Exercise and proper nutrition aren’t just hobbies. They’re the fuel that keeps me energized, focused, and productive throughout my busy days.
When I work out, I feel sharper and more focused, whether I’m in the lab conducting research or diving into my readings. Exercise allows me to manage stress, stay mentally clear, and maintain the stamina required to juggle all my roles.
That said, I’ve also learned to embrace flexibility and self-compassion. Just because fitness and nutrition are central to my lifestyle doesn’t mean I’m perfect. Life happens, and unexpected events or challenges can throw me off track. And that’s okay! Missing a workout or having an indulgent week won’t erase all the progress I’ve made. In those moments, I remind myself that balance is key, and I trust that I’ll reset and get back on track when the time is right.
For me, it’s about progress, not perfection. This mindset has shaped MissDoualaFitness and how I approach helping others. I want to show that a healthy lifestyle is not about rigid rules but about cultivating habits that empower you to thrive in every area of life. Whether you’re a busy professional, a student, or someone starting fresh, fitness and nutrition can be the tools that unlock your best self mentally, physically, and emotionally.
At the end of the day, I see fitness as more than just a routine. It’s my anchor, my source of strength, and my way of creating balance in a demanding but deeply fulfilling life. And I believe it can be that for anyone willing to take the first step.
What’s the first step you’d recommend for someone who’s ready to prioritize their health?
The first step I’d recommend for anyone ready to prioritize their health is to find their inner reason, their true “why” for embarking on this journey. Don’t get me wrong, many people start with a desire for their ideal body, but physical appearance alone isn’t enough to sustain motivation in the long run. There’s a difference between wanting something and taking consistent action to achieve it, and to take action, you need a deeper, more personal motivation that isn’t tied to how you look. If you don’t have that inner reason, you’re not truly ready to commit to this journey.
Once you’ve identified your inner reason, then you can think about your external reason, like physical appearance or specific fitness goals. I always recommend starting with the inner reason because it acts as your anchor; it’s the self-reflection that will keep you going through challenges. The external reason, on the other hand, is often the initial spark that gets you started. Finding the external reason is quick. It might only take a few minutes, but uncovering your inner reason can take time, sometimes even weeks. And that’s okay; it’s part of the process.
Fitness and nutrition aren’t just about eating vegetables and moving your body; they’re a way to connect with and nurture your mind, body, and soul. Your inner reason speaks to your soul, giving you the emotional strength to stay committed. Exercise strengthens your body and gives you the energy to tackle life’s demands. And nourishing yourself with healthy food fuels your mind, keeping you focused and clear-headed. Together, these elements create harmony, helping you build a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.
When you align your health journey with all three mind, body, and soul, you’re not just making a change; you’re creating a foundation for lasting transformation.
Can you share a successful story from one of your clients that highlights the impact of your personalized approach?
Every story is unique, so it’s hard to pinpoint just one successful story because every client’s journey is personal and rewarding in its own way. For me, a transformation is truly successful when a client’s mindset shifts in a positive direction. At that point, their new routine becomes a natural part of their life, and even if they go one to two weeks without healthy eating or exercise, they come back and tell me how much of a difference they feel, whether it’s in their energy levels or how they tackle their daily tasks. When that mindset has changed, the physical results are sure to follow; it’s just a matter of time.
However, if I had to highlight one success, it would be the journey of a young lady I’m currently working with who lives in France. The time zone difference alone was a challenge, but that didn’t stop her. During our initial consultation, she expressed frustration with previous weight loss attempts that never lasted. She would often return to square one, feeling defeated. But we took a different approach: we focused on consistency over perfection, making small, sustainable changes rather than aiming for drastic, unrealistic goals.
A month into her journey, she started noticing positive shifts in all aspects of her life, such as more energy, better focus, and a sense of mental clarity. She also started embracing her body more, stepping out of her comfort zone in terms of her wardrobe choices. She found the confidence to wear clothes she had previously avoided, showing off her progress in a way that made her feel empowered. By week six, she began seeing physical changes, and people around her noticed too. But what truly stood out was how much she started enjoying the process itself, which is a key part of my philosophy at MissDoualaFitness: fitness and wellness should feel like a celebration of your body, not a punishment.
Her progress has been remarkable, and I can’t wait to share her full transformation. It’s a perfect example of how our personalized approach at MissDoualaFitness not only helps people achieve their goals but also shifts their mindset in a way that makes wellness a sustainable, long-term part of their lives.
What’s a common myth about fitness and nutrition you’d like to debunk?
A common myth I’d love to debunk is the one that says, “Women should avoid weightlifting because it makes them look manly.” This is not true at all! At MissDoualaFitness, we believe that women can absolutely be strong, fit, and feminine. Strength training not only builds muscle but also boosts metabolism, improves posture and enhances overall health. It doesn’t make you bulky; rather, it empowers you to embrace your body to its full potential. Fitness should always be about enhancing your natural self and embracing your strength, no matter your gender or body type.
Another myth I want to break is the idea that to see results, you must eliminate your favorite foods or stop eating out. There’s this misconception that to be healthy, you must live on salads and tiny portions of bland food. At MissDoualaFitness, we want to show you that healthy living isn’t about restriction—it’s about balance and smart choices. You can absolutely enjoy your favorite dishes, just with some tweaks that support your health goals. Adding flavours and spices is a beautiful way to reconnect with your culture and food traditions. You don't have to sacrifice taste to be healthy! It’s all about education, mindset, and finding ways to incorporate foods that bring you joy while nourishing your body.
So, it’s not about extremes or deprivation. It’s about learning what works for your body, adjusting where necessary, and most importantly, understanding why you’re doing it. When you have the right mindset and education, you can find a sustainable path to health that feels authentic and achievable.
Lastly, where do you see MissDoualaFitness in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I envision MissDoualaFitness evolving into a space where medicine and fitness seamlessly intersect, a clinic that embodies the philosophy that exercise and nutrition are the first line of defense in health.
Here’s the vision: a two-floor clinic where the first floor is dedicated to fitness and equipped with trainers, kinesiologists, dietitians, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists, while the second floor houses medical professionals from various specialties. Imagine a patient being diagnosed with a condition like diabetes and needing to manage their health through weight loss and physical activity. Instead of simply being handed a generic plan, the doctor on the second floor prescribes a tailored fitness and nutrition program, which is then passed to the team downstairs.
This collaborative approach ensures that patients receive holistic care and a personalized plan that supports their medical treatment while addressing their physical, nutritional, and emotional well-being. MissDoualaFitness will be a place where people don’t just treat illnesses but actively build healthier lives.
My ultimate goal is to redefine what “healthcare” looks like by creating a space where fitness and medicine work hand in hand, empowering people to take control of their health in a sustainable, meaningful way.
