Crystals and gemstones inspire me. People may think of crystals as just lifeless rocks but to me they have energy. When I hold them in my hands, I feel connected to the whole Universe!
Crystals are creativity in motion and as a writer, creativity is what gets me up in the morning.
Crystals are elements and minerals that have been forged together under extreme temperatures, pressure and conditions, and have travelled through space and time over several thousands of years, and ultimately appear as solid matter in all varieties of colours.
Crystals are chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy and even quantum physics all rolled into one and they each have their own stories to tell. Their names, colours, inherent structure, geographical homes and legends give us clues about the meaning of life.
Although it may seem like crystals are trending nowadays, we as humans have been fascinated with crystals since ancient times. We have been using crystals in spiritual ceremonies, as decorations, during long voyages, and for healing throughout history.
Even today in the 21st Century, crystals can be found everywhere: living rooms, jewelry, statues, architecture, archaeological sites, the Bible, watches, graphite pencils, amplifiers, radio transmitters, silicon chips, ruby lasers…
And LCD Display (as in your cell phone screen) is short for “Liquid Crystal Display!” And even NASA studies crystal formations in outer space!
The list goes on and on and if crystals fascinate you too, here are some ways you can bring crystal energy into your field and specifically how crystals can boost your creative writing practice.
But just to clarify: Yes, crystals are magical in a sense, but they are not the source of our creativity and ideas. Creativity comes from within us and the connections we make in our thinking. Having crystals in our midst simply cues our environment and reminds us of where we are headed, to trust our own intuition, and to keep going on our creative journey.

8 Ways to Use Crystals to Boost Creativity
1. PLACE CRYSTALS ON YOUR DESK – I keep several crystals within arms’ reach on my writing desk. Right now, I have a selection of Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Opal, Citrine and Rose Quartz sitting on an orange plate in the top right corner of my desk in my office. Together, they remind me of the people I like to serve most – my coaching clients and my readers.
2. HOLD A CRYSTAL DURING MEDITATION – Crystals and meditation go hand in hand. With your eyes closed, start by holding your crystal of choice in one or both hands with palms up and open fists. Focus on your breath. Feel relaxed as your thoughts pass through your awareness.
3. GO ROCKHOUNDING – Rockhounding (or amateur geology or fossicking) is going outside into the natural environment (like a beach or a hiking trail) to collect loose rocks, gems, seashells, minerals, or fossils. No matter where you live in the world, I’m sure there are all kinds of natural wonders for you to discover. Just remember that as you explore nature, make sure to stay safe and respect all of the life forms around you, as well.
4. MAKE A PIECE OF ARTWORK USING CRYSTALS – If you happen to find some gems on your travels, why not treat them as paint colours in your art projects? Crystals can be crushed into glittery powders and glued on a canvas. Or, if you want to keep your natural treasures whole, you can turn them into a mosaic for your garden. Or, you can use them as metaphors in your writing. Either way, the applications are endless!
5. WEAR CRYSTAL JEWELLERY – My father is the reason why I like crystals so much. As a world traveller, he has given me so many lovely pieces of jewellery, starting as a charm bracelet that jingles. Now I have a lovely collection of rings, bracelets, pendants, pins, broaches and earrings that I hold dear and wear with delight.
6, GO TO A CRYSTAL SHOP – There’s a joke on Pinterest that says, “I’ve really got to start saving money – ooh, look, crystals!” As odd as it may sound, there are those of us who like to go into crystal shops and buy the loose crystals that speak to us. If you bring any home, place them on your window sill on the night of a full moon and give them a moon bath. Afterwards, feel free to arrange your crystals however you like throughout your home. The energy of the crystals will raise the vibe in your space and they make great conversation pieces!
7. PUT CRYSTALS UNDER YOUR PILLOW – If you’re looking to solve a problem or want to have weird dreams or get a better night’s sleep, place a crystal cocktail inside your pillowcase in a pouch under your pillow while you’re sleeping. For me, Angelite and Amethyst help me relax and have peace of mind while Labradorite and Blue Apatite help me access my subconscious and give me colourful dreams. Just don’t forget them on laundry day!
8. USE CRYSTALS IN YOUR SELF-CARE – In addition to my coaching training and my English degree, I’ve also studied esthetics at the Aveda Institute. We covered all kinds of topics including: nutrition, essential oils, massage and chakras and I was surprised to learn they used Tourmaline in their skincare products to boost radiance. All in all, it was an education in self-care and doing daily acts of self-care can do wonders for the quality of your life.
