8 Astrological Events That Fueled Gen Z's Collective Anxiety

Over the past 15 years, significant astrological phenomena, combined with rapid technological advances, social upheavals, and economic uncertainties, appear to have fuelled anxiety, especially among Generation Z, who are navigating formative years in an era of unprecedented transformation.

Generation Z, born between 1995 and 2010, are more attuned to external influences, including global crises and societal shifts, which are mirrored symbolically in astrology. For instance, significant astrological events, such as eclipses or planetary alignments, are commonly associated with themes of upheaval and change, which may resonate deeply with individuals already navigating high-pressure environments. Additionally, the cultural resurgence of astrology among Gen Z, driven by its prevalence on social media platforms, has amplified discussions about its psychological impact, making it both a coping mechanism and a lens through which they process collective and personal challenges.

While there is no scientific evidence to conclusively support astrology's influence on mental health, these celestial occurrences often coincide with profound societal and personal changes, making them a compelling framework for understanding collective and individual anxieties. Many people report feeling heightened stress, anxiety, and emotional instability during certain events, such as Mercury retrogrades, eclipses, or intense planetary alignments.

Why Gen Z may be more at risk than their millennial counterparts

Gen Z is the first generation of digital natives, with social media platforms integral to their lives. While these platforms facilitate communication and self-expression, they also foster comparison culture, cyberbullying, and unrealistic standards of success and beauty.

The 24/7 news cycle exposes Gen Z to constant global crises, including climate change, economic instability, and political unrest, which contribute to a heightened sense of existential dread. Gen Z members have grown up during a time of economic uncertainty following the 2008 financial crisis, with concerns about debt, housing, and job security dominating their outlook.

Climate anxiety is particularly acute among Gen Z, with this generation acutely aware of the environmental degradation and its potential long-term consequences. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z is more likely to discuss mental health openly, reducing stigma but also increasing awareness of anxiety-related symptoms. This cultural shift has contributed to higher reported rates of anxiety.

Astrology and rising Gen Z anxiety: Decoding the cosmic impact

Astrology suggests that celestial movements influence collective energy by symbolizing shifts in societal focus, emotional states, and existential themes. The positions of planets and their interactions create energetic "waves" that reflect changes in human consciousness and global events. This perspective views the cosmos as a mirror for the collective psyche, with astrological phenomena offering insight into shared experiences and challenges.

Astrological alignments and global events

Astrology provides a symbolic lens through which people interpret periods of upheaval and uncertainty. Over the past 15 years, significant astrological events have paralleled key moments in global history, fuelling anxiety, especially among the introspective and sensitive members of Gen Z, who currently range from their early teens to mid-twenties.

Pluto in Capricorn (2008–2023)

This transit brought deep, transformative energy to areas related to structure, authority, and societal systems. Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, is associated with discipline, ambition, government, business, and long-term goals. As Pluto, the planet of transformation, death, and rebirth, moved through this sign, it prompted a global re-examination of power structures, institutions, and the systems that govern our lives.

During this period, we saw significant economic shifts, with the 2008 financial crisis serving as a catalyst for questioning the stability and fairness of financial systems. The rise of social movements and protests, aimed at challenging governmental and corporate power, reflected the wider call for a restructuring of societal norms.

Gen Z came of age amidst these systemic breakdowns, leaving them with a deep-seated mistrust of authority and uncertainty about their future stability.

Uranus in Aries (2011–2019)

The impact of Uranus in Aries on Gen Z was profound, as this generation experienced a world during rapid transformation, marked by rebellion, innovation, and the quest for personal freedom. As digital natives, Gen Z, uniquely positioned to witness and contribute to the shifts in social, political, and technological landscapes during this period. The spirit of individualism and rebellion that defined Uranus in Aries resonated deeply with Gen Z's values of authenticity and self-expression. This era saw Gen Z challenging traditional norms, questioning established institutions, and embracing non-conformity.

They grew up during a time of significant social movements, commencing with The Arab Spring and the Syrian Civil war, Occupy Wall Street movement, same sex marriage legislation, Black Lives Matter, Me Too, Brexit, and climate activism, all of which highlighted issues of systemic injustice, gender equality, and environmental responsibility. These movements empowered Gen Z to use their voices and social media platforms to challenge the status quo and demand change.

At the same time, the disruptive energy of Uranus in Aries coincided with the rise of innovative technologies, which shaped Gen Z’s worldview. Social media became a powerful tool for self-expression and activism, giving rise to influencers, digital entrepreneurship, and new forms of communication. The rapid pace of technological innovation, from the proliferation of smartphones to the advent of AI and social media algorithms, created both opportunities and anxieties for Gen Z, who navigated a world of constant connectivity, information overload, and the pressure to remain relevant.

Neptune in Pisces (2011-present)

Neptune’s entry into Pisces marked an era of increased focus on spirituality, escapism, and collective consciousness. Neptune is associated with illusion, dreams, and the subconscious, and its influence in Pisces’ energy heightens our sensitivity to global issues and emotions. During this period, widespread issues like the refugee crisis, environmental concerns, and mental health awareness have come to the forefront, often contributing to a collective sense of overwhelm. The "Neptune effect" can blur boundaries, leading to heightened empathy, but also to escapism and disillusionment, which may amplify anxiety in individuals feeling inundated by the world’s problems.

The 2017 total solar eclipse in the U.S.

This event sparked widespread collective discussions, blending awe for its celestial beauty with deeper existential and societal reflections. It became a moment of global connection, particularly amplified by its visibility across the United States and the massive media and online attention it garnered

Eclipses, in astrology, indicate endings and beginnings, often linked to sudden changes, revelations, and the uncovering of hidden truths. The psychological impact of eclipses can heighten sensitivity, cause mood swings, and lead to disruptions in sleep, which may amplify feelings of anxiety. The 2017 eclipse became a moment to reflect on personal and collective paths, prompting questions about purpose, meaning, and humanity's place in the grander scheme of things. This introspective energy permeated online discussions, where people shared their feelings of insignificance yet interconnectedness within the cosmos.

The event also underscored Gen Z's hyperconnected reality. The eclipse was one of the most shared celestial events in history, with hashtags, livestreams, and eclipse selfies flooding platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Social media not only amplified the visibility of the event but also created a space for real-time collective dialogue, blending scientific excitement, spiritual interpretations, personal anecdotes and inspired millions to pause and reflect on the majesty of the universe, and view it as a rare opportunity to reconnect with nature and marvel at phenomena beyond human control.

Chiron in Aries (2018-present)

Chiron, known as the "wounded healer," entered Aries in 2018, signalling a period focused on individual identity and self-worth wounds. Aries, representing the self, is where Chiron’s influence drives individuals to confront personal insecurities and wounds tied to identity. This transit has highlighted personal anxieties about identity, self-expression, and empowerment, which can lead to a heightened sense of vulnerability and coincides with a growing conversation around mental health, individualism, and self-acceptance, which has involved confronting deeply embedded insecurities and fears.

Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius (2020)

The "Great Conjunction" of Jupiter and Saturn in December 2020 marked the beginning of a new era in Aquarius, the sign of innovation, technology, and community. Astrologers believe this shift emphasizes themes of societal progress, innovation, and unity, but also anxiety around the role of technology and digital life. With an increased reliance on digital interaction post-2020, especially due to remote work and the rapid integration of technology this shift has sparked anxiety around privacy, personal connection, and the balance between virtual and physical lives.

2020 Saturn-Pluto conjunction

The Saturn-Pluto conjunction was a powerful alignment that symbolized the dismantling of old structures and the birth of new ones. This rare planetary conjunction occurred alongside the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which triggered an unprecedented global crisis. For Gen Z, this period was especially transformative, marked by both intense anxiety and moments of profound personal growth.

Saturn, the planet of discipline, boundaries, and responsibility, combined with Pluto, the planet of transformation and destruction, brought a sense of societal breakdown that mirrored the collapse of normal life during the pandemic. With lockdowns, social distancing, and the disruption of education, work, and everyday routines, Gen Z found themselves at the forefront of a rapidly changing world. The familiar structures they had relied upon; school, social gatherings, and family dynamics, were suddenly upended, creating a sense of instability and uncertainty.

For Gen Z, who were already facing a world filled with economic instability, environmental crises, and social justice movements, the Saturn-Pluto conjunction underscored their fears about the future. The pandemic amplified these concerns, particularly regarding health, security, and the viability of long-term goals. This generation, already attuned to the urgency of climate change and societal inequities, now experienced a new reality of remote learning, job insecurity, and a stark shift in the way they connected with the world.

This conjunction, however, was not only a time of crisis, but it also served as an opportunity for transformation. While Gen Z grappled with uncertainty, they were also uniquely positioned to adapt to the changing landscape. The pandemic accelerated technological innovation, and Gen Z’s digital fluency enabled them to stay connected, access information, and even lead social movements through platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. The Saturn-Pluto conjunction, by forcing them to confront the collapse of old systems, spurred a generation of young people to seek out new ways of living, working, and advocating for change.

Despite the challenges, the Saturn-Pluto alignment encouraged Gen Z to redefine their purpose and values. It highlighted the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the need for collective healing. This period instilled a desire to rebuild society in a more equitable and sustainable way, even as it challenged them with personal and collective fears. The upheaval created by the conjunction ultimately will give Gen Z an opportunity to gain experience and develop into the next generation of leaders, empowered by the lessons of transformation and the necessity of breaking down old structures to make way for new ones.

The 2021-2023 Saturn-Uranus squares

A square is an aspect that occurs when two planets are about 90 degrees apart. Squares create tension, conflict, and struggles, and can require action and effort to overcome obstacles. A Saturn (structure) and Uranus (freedom) only occurs every 20 – 22 years, with a series of these squares occurring during 2021 and 2022. These squares represented tensions between stability and disruption, often associated with social clashes, restrictive regulations, and a push for freedom. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent regulatory measures to combat it intensified these themes, as people worldwide struggled with balancing personal freedom with societal responsibilities. This ongoing tension exacerbated collective anxiety, particularly as people navigated uncertainties around health, policy, and personal autonomy.
