Maintaining a healthy balance during the holidays can be a struggle for some. As the holiday season approaches, the anticipation of joy, celebration, and quality time with loved ones fills the air. With the temptation of indulgent treats and an abundance of delicious dishes, it's easy for our well-intentioned health goals to take a backseat because we numb our overstimulation and busyness.

We stop going to the gym because we are busy. We overeat because, well you have to “give it a try” before it hits the table. We drink a bit more than usual to fit in with the family and social engagement. Our mental health, energetic balance, and emotions can suffer big time because of it.

I’m not here to tell you that you can’t, or shouldn’t indulge during the holidays. It’s the season to celebrate and a time to let loose a little. But it is important to be mindful and to remain present in our bodies during these times.

I'm here to share 5 ways on how to not only survive but thrive in terms of your health and well-being during the holidays.

It's a time to embrace a few key ideas: first, healthy eating isn't about deprivation; rather, it's a conscious decision to prioritize your well-being. Second, maintaining energetic awareness will prevent you from feeling depleted and overwhelmed by the energy of those around you. And third, that being aware of your emotions can help you lean into them rather than stuff or numb them.

Let's explore some approaches, incorporating elements of mindfulness and spirituality, to help you navigate the holiday season with both joy and health in mind.

Embracing mindfulness during the holidays

During this time of year, it's essential to approach meals and family with mindfulness. Mindfulness involves being present in the moment, savoring each bite, and listening to your body's cues. It's also important to check in with yourself to know when it's time to sit outside, take a deep breath, and gather your thoughts and energy.

As you gather with loved ones around the holiday table, take a moment to appreciate the flavors, textures, and aromas of your food. By engaging your senses, you can cultivate a deeper connection with your meals, remain grounded in your body, and foster gratitude for the nourishment they provide.

I talk about this in my podcast episode with Renata Trebing, a food and wellness expert, about how important it is to nourish our bodies and our souls.

By approaching the food at the table with a present state of mind, consciously engaging with everything we’re consuming, and listening to what our bodies are saying, we can avoid overindulging ourselves in the spur of the moment.

Second, before you enter into any gathering check yourself! How are you feeling?? Where are your emotions and thoughts? Can you meditate to find your calm and center? These things will help you become aware of when something or someone triggers you.

Remember you want to walk away feeling full of love and appreciation, not full of fear or anxiety!

Nourishing your body, mind, and soul with nutrient-dense foods, fresh air, and clear intentions

Amidst the array of holiday delights, prioritize nutrient-dense foods to nourish both your body and soul. A balanced meal, rich in vibrant vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains, can be a feast for the senses.

In the spirit of mindfulness, consider the colors and textures of your plate, appreciating the nourishment these foods provide. Also, consider who prepared this loving dish for your table!

Food doesn’t have to be heavy, greasy, and full of fat and sodium to be good. Food is something we enjoy with all of our senses. Taking the time to interact with our food can make us appreciate it that much more.

Breathing is a really important technique to stay focused in the present moment. That is why I emphasize meditating in all of my teachings. If you think about it, breathing in the aromas of the delicious meal you prepared is another way to meditate. It's also supportive of being present in the NOW to help you soak in all the love and blessings that surround you.

Gratitude for the Earth's bounty and the hands that prepared your meal can infuse a spiritual dimension into your holiday eating experience.

Portion control as a path to balance

Mindful portion control is a cornerstone of healthy holiday eating, engaging and remaining centered with yourself.

Instead of mindlessly piling your plate, consider using smaller plates to encourage moderation.

Instead of saying “Yes” to stopping by everyone’s house, consider the spaces you feel good about stepping into and before you engage be sure the conversations are ones YOU align with.

If politics are a no-go for you, steer clear!

This approach allows you to enjoy the festive fare without compromising your commitment to your inner balance. Spiritually, portion control can be viewed as a form of self-discipline and respect for the body as a temple.

By recognizing the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, you can approach holiday feasting with a sense of reverence, honoring the divine within you.

Cultivating spiritual and mindful movement

Maintaining physical activity during the holidays is not only vital for your physical health but also an opportunity to nurture your spiritual and mindful well-being. It supports the movement of energy through the body, ensuring that we release what doesn't service us and bringing in what does.

As I always say, we heal on 5 levels. Spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally, and energetically, and physical movement supports them ALL!

Incorporate movement as a form of celebration for your body and a connection to the present moment.

Finding time for daily exercise during the holidays may seem challenging, but with the right attitude, it can become an integral part of the celebration.

Engage in activities that resonate with your soul, whether it's a walk, a home yoga practice, or dancing to soulful holiday tunes. What brings you joy? What makes you happy?

Do that. By infusing intention into your movement, you transform exercise into a spiritual practice.

I talk about this in my recent YouTube episode about how we can take time for ourselves to just walk or exercise and practice mindfulness that way.
