Vibration has been commonly discussed in popular culture for a while. With phrases such as “good vibes only” and “they give me bad vibes,” you can see that people’s energy and how they express it have long been something we observe and discuss. In new-age spirituality, vibration is talked about heavily concerning themes of the law of attraction, ascension, and manifestation. Still, the concept of vibration may not be something that everyone understands. This article will define vibration and provide 5 simple tips to raise yours as part of your spiritual self-care.

The meaning of vibration

In the spiritual sense, everything in the universe is made up of energy, vibrates at a different frequency, and has its own energetic signature. Vibration or frequency can be defined as the energetic state of being for a person, place, object, or thought. Within the concepts of the law of attraction and manifestation, we are thought to attract people, places, and things into our lives that are on the same frequency or energetic level as us. Often described in terms of being high or low, vibration exists over a gradient. On the lower end of things, we have the 3D, which includes some of the denser realities that come with experiencing life in the material world: war, economic systems, discrimination, and more. We also experience “duality consciousness” in the 3D where we view ourselves as distinct from everything in the world, and we view the world as separate parts.

As you raise your level of consciousness, you elevate your way of thinking and feeling. This can lead to awakening and ascension, where you begin to vibrate higher. While you are ascending, you bridge your 3D reality with the energetic states of the 4D, 5D, and other higher realms of consciousness. You are going from a life led by your ego to a life led by your soul. During ascension, your vessel is still rooted in the material plane, but you develop elevated thoughts and feelings, a higher perspective, and a deeper understanding of spiritual truths. We begin to experience “unity consciousness” when we start to reach higher dimensions and maintain higher frequencies. Within unity consciousness, we perceive everyone and everything as being interconnected, and we are more in tune with compassion and empathy as we experience one love, the highest possible energetic frequency.

5 simple tips on how to raise your vibration

1. Practice gratitude

Some spiritualists believe that there are only two frequencies in the entire universe and that everything else is just a different expression of one of them. Those two frequencies are fear and love, and true gratitude is thought to be a gateway to experiencing universal love. True gratitude means that we remove the conditions that we often place on it. We think gratitude is about being grateful for something because we know that there is someone whom we perceive as having less fortune, or because we can imagine a reality where we do not have something we currently possess. Instead, we should simply be grateful without the extras and avoid giving our power away to circumstances. It is our emotional state and thought processes that shape and mirror our vibration, which affects our circumstances. It is not the other way around, with circumstances shaping our energetic frequency.

The truth is that in every season, phase, and circumstance of your life, you can find something to be grateful for, even if it is just one thing. We often find that the things that mean the most to us are intangible: our relationships, talents, wisdom, spiritual gifts, and more. With that in mind, remember that you are more powerful than you have been conditioned to believe, and gratitude is an important practice for your spiritual wellness toolkit. Whenever you want to raise your vibration, practice gratitude. Start listing the people, places, and things that you are grateful for and sit with the feelings that are brought up for you. You can also keep a gratitude journal to document the people, places, and things that you are grateful for every day, which will eventually change your perspective and train you to see the positive aspects of every situation.

2. Be present with nature

Spending time in nature is often touted as something important for mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, which it is, but you can go deeper. Setting intentions is one of the foundations of spirituality and spiritual well-being. A more intentional reframing to get the most out of this practice is to “be present with nature.” Spending time in nature can just involve you being there, but being present requires your undivided focus and attention. Being present requires you to use all of your senses in the time you spend outdoors. Allow yourself to observe the sights, smells, and feel of your environment. Put your headphones away, put your phone down, and simply be one with nature.

Listening to the chirping of the birds, the rustling of the leaves, the sounds of natural flowing water, and whatever else takes place where you experience nature can start to align you with the natural rhythms of the Earth. We are made up of organic material and water, just as the Earth is. An important part of one’s spiritual journey is creating a reciprocal relationship with the planet. It is important to give back to the Earth as she gives so much to us. Being present with nature is a means to build this relationship, and with it, you will see reciprocity, balance, harmony, and love become more pronounced in different areas of your life. This is because witnessing the Earth truly allows you to see the interconnectedness of all things. Journaling or meditating about your experiences in nature can be a way to further explore the insights you gain.

3. Do something meditative

Prayer and meditation are two of the most common spiritual practices. Prayer is about speaking messages directly to the source, spirit, or your higher self, while meditation is about receiving messages. Meditation can help us to raise our frequency because we are connecting directly to source energy to receive messages, wisdom, and insight from a higher perspective. Still, the practice of sitting still, connecting to the breath, and shepherding one’s thoughts as a practice is not always accessible and does not work for everyone. However, there are myriad ways to reap the benefits of using meditative practices to connect to a higher power.

Doing something meditative is about connecting to the universe in a way that feels organic for you. Using sound healing, aromatherapy, smudging, and other means that you feel called to include, you can make any activity meditative. With a singular focus, doing something meditative can happen when you are going for a walk, sitting on your porch, cooking, painting, writing, singing, dancing, or more. The act of creating, to bring something from the mind's eye into the material plane, can serve as a channel for us to be guided by a higher power. When used in the service of the collective and our interconnectedness, creation can help us to reach higher vibrations. Remember to set your intentions, engage all of your senses to anchor yourself in the present moment, and witness what thoughts and feelings come up for you while you experience a flow state with the divine.

4. Engage with the healing essence of water

In many cultures around the world, water is seen as the most healing of all the elements, with the ability to renew, restore, and cleanse on multiple levels. Drinking water is important for physical health because it hydrates the body, supports bodily functions, and cleanses to remove toxins. The sound and feel of water are also found to benefit mental and emotional health by being soothing and relaxing. There are also spiritual wellness benefits that come with the presence of water. Water can absorb or transform energy, which is what makes its presence powerful for spiritual cleansing and renewal. This symbolism is evidenced by the many religions and cultures that include water in cleansing rituals and hold beliefs about the profound healing properties of certain rivers and other large bodies of water.

Water also reinforces the concept of interconnectedness. All living things need water to survive, and the Earth’s water cycle naturally shares this vital resource with all of life. Spirituality and Health Magazine has an article that discusses the spiritual significance of water and outlines some Ayurvedic medicine guidelines for intentionally drinking water for physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits. In addition to intentionally drinking water, you can engage with the healing essence of water during spiritual baths, showers, and visits to large bodies of water. Because of water's ability to reflect mirror images and conform to any container it is placed in, it is thought to be a spiritual teacher, reminding us to be adaptable while illuminating all that needs to be purified within us. The purification and cleansing properties of water can help us to raise our vibration.

5. Transmute and release energy that does not serve you

We all have personal hygiene practices that we do every day, such as brushing our teeth, taking a shower, and washing our face, to name a few. In that same vein, it is also important to tend to our spiritual hygiene regularly as part of our holistic wellness. As mentioned earlier, life in the material world is related to the 3D, which can be a very dense reality, especially as we try to ascend, vibrate higher, and raise our consciousness. That means there will be circumstances and events you witness or experience during your day that you need to release from your soul to ascend.

Acknowledgment is always the first step in releasing or transforming energy. After acknowledgment, you can thank any thoughts or feelings that have come up throughout your day that are not serving you and release them. You can release energies that no longer serve you by meditating and visualizing them leaving your energy field, chanting mantras, doing mirror work, or taking a cleansing spiritual bath. You can also write down the energies you want to release and decree that it is removed from your vessel. If you can do so safely, you can burn your list and offer the ashes to the Earth for her to help you transmute the energy. Releasing lower vibrational energies and things that no longer serve you will help you raise your frequency.
