The world of nutrition is confusing. Everyone has heard something, read something, or seen someone. However, this doesn’t help the majority of us reach our goals, so I am sharing my insider knowledge to help you take back control.

A person holding a wooden spoon and fork sits in front of a nearly empty plate containing just a small tomato, two corn kernels, and a few grains of salt.

The top 5 nutrition myths I see in practice

1. Carbs are bad

I can debunk this by telling you that not all carbs are bad. Okay, so ultra-processed donuts, crackers, and the things that you wouldn’t find growing aren’t the best for you and will hinder your health. But if you opt for sweet potatoes, potatoes, amaranth, lentils, brown rice, etc., then you can enjoy your carbs and reap the health benefits, too.

2. You need to eat less to lose weight

This one gets taken out of context all the time. If you want to lose weight, it’s best to see a professional to ensure you provide enough food for your body to fuel you while staying in a slight calorie deficit to lose weight. This also needs to be coupled with some kind of exercise, so you maintain your muscle mass (which is super important as we get older). The problem that I see all too often is people restricting their food too much, which stops weight loss and makes you feel awful, which is why it is best to see a professional first.

3. Eggs are bad for your cholesterol

This one has been overruled for some time now, but it is still hanging around. Eggs are good for you; they provide choline, which is great for your brain. Thinking about having 12 eggs a day is a little excessive, but a couple of eggs a day can be great for a quick protein hit, a healthy breakfast, or with your salad. The exception to that is if you have an allergy or intolerance to eggs, then stay away.

4. Supplements are a waste of money

Now, there are many supplements that I would recommend steering clear of to save your money, but there are good quality supplements that are worth every penny. How does one know which ones are worth buying and which to steer clear of? Have a 1-on-1 consult with a professional, they have the training and the knowledge to know which ones would benefit you and which brands to buy, while also knowing which ones you don’t need and should steer clear from.

5. Protein is most important to eat

Protein is one of the macronutrients we need to consume daily, and it should be included with our meals, but don’t forget about your veggies because they are just as important. The amount of protein you need to eat needs to fit your activity levels, age, etc; it also needs to be considered in the ratio to carbs and fats. Along with that, it needs to be coupled with the other nutrients that we get from veggies, not instead of veggies. To be truly healthy, we need to reach a variety.

When thinking about your health and optimizing it, don’t believe everything you see and hear. Consider where you are, what you do, and how you feel. If you are ever in doubt or want to ensure you are looking after your health, please reach out to a professional for personalized 1-on-1 advice.
