When I first started on my wellness journey, like so many of you, I was laser-focused on the goals. I had specific targets in mind losing a certain amount of weight, being able to run a faster mile, or hitting a new personal best in the gym. And don’t get me wrong, setting goals is important. It gives us a sense of direction, something to work toward. But what I quickly realized is that focusing solely on the goal can set us up for frustration.

You see, the goals were big and exciting, but they also felt distant, like I was constantly chasing something just out of reach. And every time I didn't hit the mark exactly when or how I imagined, it was discouraging. Ever been there?

That’s when I shifted my focus from the outcome to the habit.

Habits are where the magic happens

Let me tell you this: the real magic isn’t in the destination; it’s in the journey. It’s in the small, seemingly insignificant choices you make every day. It’s in showing up even when you don’t feel like it. It’s in choosing to meditate for 10 minutes, even when your mind is racing with a hundred things. It’s in opting for a nutritious meal when you could easily grab something convenient and not-so-great for you.

These little actions compound over time, and that’s where the transformation happens. But here’s the trick—these habits have to become a part of who you are, not something you do for a few weeks until you reach a goal. That’s the difference between short-term results and lasting change.

How to focus on the habit

1. Start small and be consistent

I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for nine years now, and what made it work for me wasn’t a strict goal like “lose 10 pounds by X date.” It was committing to the practice, trusting the process, and letting the results unfold. If you’re trying to build a new habit, don’t overwhelm yourself with an all-or-nothing approach. Start small 15 minutes of movement a day, one healthy meal swap, or even just drinking more water. The key is consistency, not perfection.

2. Celebrate the process, not just the wins

Instead of only celebrating when you hit a goal, start celebrating the fact that you showed up today. I tell my clients all the time, "Success isn’t about the grand achievement; it’s about the daily steps you take that lead to it." So, take a moment to honor yourself for staying committed today. The small wins add up, and before you know it, you’re living the life you once dreamed of.

3. Make your habits part of your identity

This one was a game-changer for me. It’s not about doing something because you want a specific result, but because it’s who you are. I meditate daily and listen to spiritual inspirations not because it’s a box to check off, but because it’s part of who I am. It fills my emotional and spiritual cup, allowing me to show up as my best self.

When you shift from “I want to work out to lose weight” to “I’m someone who values movement because it makes me feel strong and alive,” everything changes. The habit becomes who you are, not just what you do.

When you focus on building habits, not only do you move closer to your goals, but you start feeling better right now. You start to trust yourself more, because you’re not relying on motivation (which comes and goes); you’re relying on your daily actions, which are completely within your control. And that’s a powerful place to be.

Remember, the goal is simply a result of your consistent habits. If you show up for yourself every day, no matter how small the action, success becomes inevitable.
