Figuring out what serves you well in your life is about identifying what contributes positively to your well-being, happiness, and personal growth.
10 ways to help you discern what serves you
1. Reflect on your values
What it means: Values are fundamental beliefs that guide your behavior and decision-making. They include things like integrity, compassion, creativity, or independence.
How to reflect: Spend time thinking about what matters most to you. Consider writing a list of your top values and how they align with your current life situation. For example, if you value creativity but find yourself in a job that stifles it, it may be worth exploring ways to incorporate creative outlets into your life.
2. Assess your energy levels
What it means: Your energy levels are a measure of how much vitality and enthusiasm you have after engaging in various activities.
How to assess: Keep a diary or log where you track your energy before and after different activities, social interactions, or tasks. Notice patterns: activities that leave you feeling invigorated likely serve you well, while those that leave you exhausted might not.
3. Journal regularly
What it means: Journaling is a practice of writing down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
How to journal: Set aside time each day or week to write about your experiences, challenges, and reflections. Reviewing your journal entries over time can help you spot trends and identify which aspects of your life are consistently fulfilling or problematic.
4. Set and review goals
What it means: Goals are targets you set for yourself to achieve. They can be short-term or long-term and relate to various areas of life, such as career, personal development, or relationships.
How to review: Regularly assess your progress toward your goals. Ask yourself which goals have been particularly satisfying to work towards and which haven’t. Reflect on what factors contributed to achieving these goals and how they align with what serves you.
5. Seek feedback
What it means: Feedback is information and opinions from others about your actions or performance.
How to seek feedback: Reach out to trusted individuals in your life, such as friends, family, or colleagues, and ask for their perspectives on what they see as your strengths and areas where you thrive. This external perspective can help you identify what serves you well from an outside viewpoint.
6. Evaluate relationships
What it means: Relationships include family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.
How to evaluate: Consider the impact of each relationship on your life. Healthy relationships should provide support, positivity, and growth. Evaluate whether the people you interact with regularly are uplifting and contributing positively to your life.
7. Observe your reactions
What it means: Reactions include your emotional and physical responses to different situations.
How to observe: Pay attention to how you feel before, during, and after specific events or interactions. For example, if a particular activity consistently makes you feel stressed or unhappy, it may not be serving you well. Conversely, activities that leave you feeling content and fulfilled are likely beneficial.
8. Experiment with new experiences
What it means: Trying new things involves stepping out of your routine and exploring unfamiliar activities or environments.
How to experiment: Take up new hobbies, attend different events, or travel to new places. Reflect on these experiences and assess how they impact your happiness and personal growth. New experiences can provide insight into what resonates with you and enhances your life.
9. Analyze your successes
What it means: Successes are accomplishments or milestones you’ve achieved.
How to analyze: Look back at your past successes and consider what contributed to them. Were there specific actions, decisions, or support systems that played a role? Understanding these factors can highlight what is effective and serves you well in achieving your goals. You can use these factors to reach new successes.
10. Practice mindfulness
What it means: Mindfulness involves being present and fully engaged in the current moment without judgment.
How to practice: Engage in mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindful walking. These practices help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, enabling you to better identify what aspects of your life contribute to your overall well-being.
By applying these approaches, you can gain a clearer understanding of what serves you well and make more informed decisions about how to shape your life for greater satisfaction and fulfillment.
