Katy MacDonald
Mental Health Counselor
Katy MacDonald is a licensed mental health counselor specializing in perinatal and maternal mental health and the founder of Andover Therapy Services LLC. Katy’s practice is dedicated to supporting clients through the complex emotional experiences of the perinatal phase.
Katy’s passion for this field arose from her own profound personal loss—the passing of her first child due to an unexpected bacterial infection that led to preterm labor. This tragedy brought her face-to-face with deep grief and trauma, which profoundly shaped her understanding of the unique challenges of motherhood. Through her journey of healing, Katy connected deeply with the concept of Matrescence, the transformative process of becoming a mother, encompassing the physical, emotional, and psychological changes during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Despite its significant impact, Katy was struck by the lack of recognition, education, and support for Matrescence in American culture, where policies and resources often fall short in making this experience manageable for families.
In 2021, she earned her perinatal mental health certification and founded Andover Therapy Services to offer compassionate, specialized care to individuals navigating the emotional complexities of parenthood. Her therapeutic approach blends evidence-based techniques, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Ego-Parts Therapy, guiding clients toward greater self-compassion and understanding of the new identities that emerge during this vulnerable period.
In 2023, Katy expanded Andover Therapy Services by recruiting therapists interested in perinatal and reproductive mental health. This growth aims to improve access to specialized care, advocate for policy reform to better support families, and increase awareness around the importance of culturally competent healthcare. Katy is particularly committed to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in communities of color, ensuring that support for Matrescence reaches all individuals and families.
